My Story: A Journey to Special Education
Hello, and welcome to my story! These days you’ll find me at Tesnatee Gap Elementary, immersed in the world of Special Education. But my journey here has been anything but a straight path. Like any good tale, it’s been filled with unexpected plot twists, surprising characters, and pivotal moments that reshaped my path.
My professional story began in 2001, fresh out of Georgia College and State University. I envisioned a simple narrative: teaching first grade in my hometown until I retired. For several years, I stretched myself to learn as much as I could. I worked toward several endorsements and served on many committees at the school and county levels.
However, the first plot twist arrived in 2006. The script I’d written for myself began to fray, and I found myself on the brink of leaving education entirely. The demands felt overwhelming, and the joy was fading. I was involved in many good programs within our system, but they did not line up with my core priorities and I found myself frustrated with my job. Fortunately, my story included some incredible guardian angels in the form of my administrators. They didn’t just hear my frustrations; they saw a capacity within me that I didn’t yet recognize. They nudged me toward a new chapter: Special Education. Following their unexpected advice felt like a leap of faith, but it was precisely then that I discovered my true calling. It simply wasn’t where I, the aspiring first-grade teacher, had ever expected it to be.
From that moment, my narrative continued to unfold in exciting ways. I explored new settings, teaching online for several years before stepping into the role of Assistant Administrator for Special Programs. Then, another significant turning point came with our move to White County. I felt an undeniable pull back to the classroom, and once again, my carefully laid plans were re-plotted. I arrived at school one day and was notified that I would be transitioning from a co-teaching role into a self-contained classroom.
This wasn’t the destination I had ever penciled into my early drafts, yet I am so incredibly glad I found my way here. In this unique chapter, every day brings new revelations. I see the fruits of our labor blossoming before my eyes as my students, the true heroes of my story, continually bust through barriers they were once told they would never reach. It’s a testament to resilience, connection, and the unexpected beauty of a story that simply unfolds as it’s meant to be.
My Adventures Beyond the Classroom Walls
When the classroom door closes, my story simply shifts scenes. You’ll often find me embarking on my next adventure from the quiet comfort of home with a book in hand, to the local trails where my family and I seek new perspectives.
The pandemic brought an unexpected plot twist: it reignited my love for mountain biking. What began as a personal quest to prove to myself that I wasn’t “too old” has evolved into a new role as club sponsor for the White County Mountain Bike Team. Conquering a challenging trail helps pound out the day’s stress, and connecting with these amazing young characters offers unique opportunities to coach and teach invaluable life skills beyond the classroom.
And on Sunday mornings, another cherished setting calls: Helen First Baptist Church, where I lend my cello to the worship team. Whether it’s navigating a rocky ascent or worshiping in a sacred space, these pursuits are essential subplots that recharge my spirit and enrich my life’s narrative.
Amplifying the Narrative: My Public Speaking Journey
As the 2025 Georgia Teacher of the Year, my personal story has expanded into a platform, allowing me to share critical chapters from my journey with diverse audiences. With broad experience and a passion for connection, I’ve had the privilege of speaking at over 50 events—from district professional developments to state leadership organizations—as a keynote speaker and facilitator.
My message consistently centers on this core truth: “You Matter.” I pride myself on forging genuine connections, helping every individual recognize their vital role in our collective narrative. I would be honored to share my story and its insights with your organization.
